Therapeutic Effect of Plasmapheresis in Patients with Systemmic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract
|
|
|
To evaluate the therapeutic effect of plasmapheresis on active systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), we observedd the serological indices and immunological profile as well as the amount of 24 hour urinary protein excretion in 8 patients with active SLE before and after plasmapheresis.
The results are as follows;
1) There was no significant difference in the serum complement level before and after plasmapheresis.
2) The reduction of serum immunoglobulin and anti-ds DNA level was detected after plasmapheresis without statistical significance
3) After plasmapheresis, the significant reduction of 24 hour urinary protein excretion was observed(p<0.05).
4) We experienced one major tetany episode as well as 2 cases of minor urticaria
We suggested that plasmapheresis in conjunction with the immunosuppressive therapy could be an effective modality of management in patients with rapidly deteriorating SLE who are responding inadequately to the conventional therapy.
